This report is the first output of a multi-year ‘Blueing the Black Sea’ regional program to create a shared regional framework for sustainable management of the Black Sea with a focus on marine pollution, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, regional cooperation, as well as knowledge exchange and cooperation among the Black Sea littoral countries: Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Türkiye, and Ukraine, and Moldova, whose rivers flow into the Black Sea. The report comprises two volumes: Volume 1 draws on a wealth of information from the country background pollution diagnostics of risks and impacts prepared for Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Türkiye, and Ukraine. It aims to consolidate available information for these countries as a basis for evaluation of the economic and social impacts of pollution, and to propose a course of action toward a cleaner and healthier marine environment for increased economic benefits of the shared Black Sea blue space. Volume 2 represents a summary of the country diagnostics highlighting specific country issues and recommendations. Policy and decision makers, officials, and experts in the Black Sea countries as well as regional development partners will find the report useful in supporting the dialogue on the blue economy agenda in areas such as a healthy marine environment and actions for mitigation of eutrophication.
